Acquired in India by Colonel Norman George Roger Coats, circa early 20th century

Thence by descent

Colonel Norman George Roger Coats OBE (1888-1974) was born in Simla, India and educated in the United Kingdom before being commissioned from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst into the British Indian Army. He returned to India in 1908 and joined the 25th Punjabis, before serving as Commanding Officer of the 13th Frontier Force Rifles. Coats pursued a distinguished military career in British India through both World Wars until his retirement to Dorset in 1946. In 1914, he married Enid Isabel Florence Jacobson, who was also born and raised in India. The couple assembled a large collection of Indian works of art and decorative objects that reflected their shared love for their birth country.
