Description
Abraham Begeyn
(Leiden 1637 – 1697 Berlin)
Extensive landscape with herders and their animals fording a stream, trees on the bank behind
Pen and brown ink and grey wash over black chalk, within dark brown ink framing lines;
signed in brown ink, lower right: ABegeijn (AB in ligature)
219 by 345 mm
Begeyn’s appealing, gently Italianate landscape style, strongly influenced by Jan Asselijn (1610-1652) and Nicolaes Berchem (1621-1683), was much in demand throughout Europe: he worked not only in Amsterdam and The Hague, but also in London, contributing to the Earl of Lauderdale’s lavish redecorations at Ham House, and at Chantilly, Paris and Berlin, where he worked at the Prussian court from 1688 until his death in 1697. His drawings are, however, rare.
