The Patek Philippe reference 788/1 "Ricochet" stands among the most unconventional and artistically driven creations of the Geneva manufacture, conceived during one of the most experimental periods in its history. Introduced circa 1961 and designed by the visionary Gilbert Albert, the Ricochet series reflects a radical departure from traditional watchmaking aesthetics, embracing asymmetry, texture, and sculptural form. Albert, who led Patek Philippe’s creative department from 1955 to 1962, brought a distinctly modernist sensibility to the firm, drawing inspiration from nature and contemporary art to create some of the most avant-garde timepieces ever produced under the Patek Philippe name.

Characterized by its striking asymmetrical case, the reference 788/1 exemplifies Albert’s sculptural approach; its organic form often likened to a water-smoothed pebble when held in the hand. Crafted in 18K yellow gold, the case was executed with exceptional artistry. Period descriptions note that the Ricochet cases were hammered and hand-finished from a solid block of gold. The distinctive “cartouche” dial is adorned with Albert’s now-famous “crosshair” motif while the texture echoes the case’s surface, producing a shimmering effect that inspired the model’s evocative name, Ricochet, reminiscent of light reflecting upon water.

Powered by the robust and refined caliber 23-300, a manual-winding movement fitted with a Gyromax balance and shock protection, the reference combines technical excellence with its bold visual identity. Yet it is ultimately the rarity and design significance of the model that define its appeal: the Ricochet series was produced only for a brief period of approximately five years, with total output believed to be around 90 examples across several variations, of which approximately 20 examples of the present reference 788/1 were made. Three examples of the reference 788/1 with crosshair dials, like the present watch, are known to the market.

This Ricochet is preserved in exceptional condition with virtually no wear to the textured finish on the case and a remarkably crisp hallmark between 3 o’clock on the dial and the crown. The dial is equally well preserved with little to no loss of printing and very few notable scratches when viewed under a loupe.
