Simon Brette has emerged as one of the most exciting new independent watchmakers in recent years. His debut timepiece, the Chronomètre Artisans, launched in 2023 to widespread acclaim, earning him the prestigious Horological Revelation Prize at the same year’s Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG).
The Chronomètre Artisans was first introduced as a 12-piece souscription series in zirconium, followed by a titanium production model. The present example, the Chronomètre Artisans Rose, is one of the latest evolutions of the model. Housed in a 39 mm pink gold case, the dial that is hand-engraved by Yasmina Anti is also pink gold and subsequently DLC-coated in black. Executed in a tremblage style, the engraving creates a richly textured, three-dimensional surface. Known as the “Battle” motif, it merges elements of earlier “Dragon Scales” and “Tiger Claws” designs into a bold, sculptural composition. Compared to the earlier brass movement, this iteration features rose gold plates and bridges, offering greater visual contrast with the twin barrels, which provide a 72-hour power reserve. In addition, Simone enlarged the hands on the rose gold model to improve legibility. It also retains the signature dovetail joint at 9 o’clock, executed in white gold on this version, as a tribute to Brette’s father’s woodworking craft.
Trained as a movement engineer rather than a traditional watchmaker, Brette began his career at Chronode under Jean‑François Mojon, before continuing at MCT and MB&F. In 2021, he set out to create his own brand, centered on a collaborative approach that brought together master artisans such as engravers, polishers, and finishers etc. each entrusted with executing their craft to the highest possible standard. In total, Brette collaborated with 13 specialized artisans on this watch, each credited for their contribution, underscoring the watch’s deeply human and artisanal ethos.
Limited to just 50 pieces, of which not all have yet been completed, this model represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most sought-after contemporary independent timepieces. Preserved in excellent condition and offered with its full set of accessories, this Chronomètre Artisans in pink gold is also the first example to appear at auction, and Sotheby’s is proud to present it.
