In the realm of mid-century horology, few configurations capture the imagination quite like steel Patek Philippe dress watches. Produced during an era when precious metals reigned supreme, steel variants were manufactured in agonizingly small numbers. Among these wartime anomalies, the Patek Philippe Reference 544 "Hooded" stands as a masterclass in geometric architecture and extreme rarity.

Archival data reveals that Wenger originally manufactured a balanced run of 400 total cases for Patek Phillipe. This production was divided evenly into four distinct metal configurations:

  • Yellow Gold: 100 cases
  • Rose Gold: 100 cases
  • Stainless Steel & Gold: 100 cases
  • Stainless Steel: 100 cases

Adding to its mystique, of these six surviving steel examples only one has exclusively appeared with a highly coveted sector dial (sometimes called a scientific dial). The austere, utilitarian aesthetic of the sector dial pairs flawlessly with the cold, industrial nature of the Wenger steel case, making it one of the most visually striking and historically significant timepieces of the era.
