The Reference 130 was launched in 1934, and stands as a cornerstone in Patek Philippe's history as the brand's first serially produced chronograph. Known for its clean, elegant aesthetics, the design of the Reference 130 evolved over its near three decade production run from 1934 to 1964, encapsulating the modernism of mid-20th-century watchmaking, combining technical innovation with artisanal craftsmanship.
Early executions featured a single pusher while later iterations features two pushers. While most examples were cased in yellow gold, a smaller number were made in pink gold and stainless steel. Importantly, the Reference 130 is also one of the most stylistically diverse models produced by Patek Philippe, and was offered with a kaleidoscope of dial variations.
The present watch is a beautifully preserved example, fitted with a highly desirable unique silvered dial in exceptional condition. The dial is the only known example to feature a full “pinball” configuration, rather than incorporating Roman or Arabic numerals at 6 and 12 o’clock. Adding to its rarity and appeal, the case was crafted by none other than Emile Vichet, one of the most important Genevan casemakers, best known for crafting the cases of the Reference 1518, and most of the First Series Reference 2499.
