Introduced in 2011, the reference 5235 represented a bold and highly distinctive reinterpretation of one of Patek Philippe’s most significant complications: the annual calendar, combined with a regulator style display. Initially offered in white gold with silvered dial, the model was updated in 2019 to be presented in pink gold with gray dial.
The present example, a more recent example crafted in pink gold, showcases the reference’s distinctive design and contemporary look. Its two-tone gray dial features a vertical satin finish accented by contrasting black chapter rings and sub registers and white highlights. A pleasing design detail is the reverse coloring to the calendar displays. Traditionally, this would be white background with black script, but the 5235 has a more contemporary take, flipping the design norms to display the calender with black apertures and high contrast white script. The regulator display separates the indications across individual axes, with hours, minutes, and seconds displayed independently for exceptional clarity and balance.
Powering the watch is the innovative calibre 31-260 REG QA, developed specifically for the reference and notable for incorporating advanced silicon technology within the escapement. The case takes its design cues from some of Patek Philippes greatest mid century designs, notably the Ref 3448 and 3450, with sharp angular brushed lugs and mid case, complimented by a snap-on exhibition case back and bezel, both executed in high polish.
