Reference 2451 was introduced in 1949 and remained in production until the late 1950s. It holds particular importance as Patek Philippe’s waterproof alternative to the classic reference 96.
Often referred to by collectors as the “Aquatic” or “Vacuum,” the model’s reputation stems from its enhanced water resistance, which allowed it to be worn during swimming, an unusual feature for the time. The case was manufactured by FB (François Borgel) Taubert, a case maker in waterproof constructions who also supplied cases for other notable water-resistant references, including the reference 565. Scholarship suggests that approximately 800 examples in yellow gold were produced, of which only around 80 have resurfaced on the market.
We are pleased to offer the present lot, consigned directly by the granddaughter of the original owner, R. O. Bassler, whose name is engraved on the caseback. Mr. Bassler moved to Toledo in 1928 to join the Toledo Trust Company, where he remained for 42 years. The watch is fitted with an attractive 14k yellow gold C+B bracelet to match the 14k yellow gold case, while the dial has gracefully aged to a warm champagne patina, creating a harmonious monochromatic appearance.
