In the mid-century period, several of Cartier’s branches began revisiting and reinterpreting earlier designs. This included the famed London workshop under the visionary direction of Jean-Jacques Cartier, resulting in the Oval and Maxi Oval.
At the same time, Cartier Paris developed its own interpretation of the Baignoire. While these creations shared hallmark Cartier elements, including Roman numerals and the classic dial layout, subtle distinctions in case geometry and signatures set them apart. Produced in very limited numbers, as was typical of Cartier’s output at the time, these pieces underscored the enduring appeal of the form and ultimately paved the way for its broader revival.
The present Baignoire measures an impressive 38 mm in length and 28 mm in width. The largest variation of the Baignoire known on the market, it still preserves the elegant proportions of the classic Baignoire. Its dimensions place it between the Oval and Maxi Oval of the same period, lending it exceptional presence on the wrist. The case remains in very good, honest condition, with crisp hallmarks and clearly defined engravings to the case back. The dial has developed a beautiful, warm patina throughout. The deployant clasp is believed to be original, showing light, consistent patina, and is further distinguished by an engraved “L.C.T.” monogram, and has the matching 'EJ' and french marks as the case. Accompanied by its original presentation case, we are pleased to present this unusually large and rare example, which will be a superb addition to any discerning Cartier connoisseur’s collection.
