The Patek Philippe reference 5146/1G belongs to the second generation of the manufacture’s celebrated Annual Calendar, a complication first introduced with the reference 5035 in 1996. Launched in 2005, the reference 5146 replaced its predecessor with a larger 39 mm case and a substantially revised display, adding both moon phases and a power-reserve indication. The annual calendar itself remains one of Patek Philippe’s most practical modern complications, automatically distinguishing between months of 30 and 31 days and requiring manual correction only once each year, at the end of February.
Dating from circa 2007, the present reference 5146/1G is rendered entirely in 18k white gold, including its substantial multi-link bracelet, giving the otherwise classical annual calendar a markedly different presence from the more commonly encountered strap versions. The silvered dial is arranged with day and month indications at 9 and 3 o’clock respectively, a power-reserve display at 12, and the date aperture and moon phase balanced at 6 o’clock. Applied white-gold Arabic numerals at the cardinal positions and baton indexes complete a layout that accommodates considerable information while remaining notably clear and symmetrical.
The bracelet-equipped reference 5146/1G offers a less frequently encountered interpretation of one of Patek Philippe’s defining modern complications. Its continuous white-gold construction gives the watch greater visual and physical presence while retaining the restrained proportions and balanced calendar display that distinguish the reference 5146. Combining the practicality of the annual calendar with moon phases, power reserve and an integrated precious-metal bracelet, the present watch represents an elegant and unusually substantial expression of Patek Philippe’s complicated watchmaking of the period.
