Introduced in 2012, the Patek Philippe reference 5204 succeeded the celebrated reference 5004 and marked a significant evolution in the manufacture’s lineage of perpetual calendar chronographs. Most notably, it was the first model to be equipped with Patek Philippe’s fully in-house calibre CHR 29-535 PS Q, replacing the earlier Lemania-based movement and heralding a new chapter in the firm’s approach to high complications.
Alongside this technical advancement, the reference 5204 introduced a series of subtle yet important aesthetic refinements. The case was enlarged to 40 mm, while the dial design evolved with the adoption of baton hour markers in place of the applied Arabic numerals of its predecessor. The calendar display was also rebalanced, most recognisably through the reconfigured moon-phase aperture, whose orientation lends a distinctive visual character to the dial. Initially launched in platinum with an opaline silver dial, the model was later complemented by a black dial variant, followed by pink gold examples.
Fresh to the market, the present reference 5204P with black dial is offered with its Certificate of Origin. As the first perpetual calendar chronograph to house the manufacture’s in-house movement, registered for an astounding amount of six patents, the reference 5204 is a true testimony of Patek Philippe’s ground-breaking innovations.
