In 2004, Richard Mille launched its first automatic model, the RM005, featuring a semi-instantaneous date change. The significant challenge with the RM005 was the creation of the titanium baseplate. The brand needed to invest in the appropriate tools for its production. The complexity lay not only in designing the baseplates but also in the techniques required for their manufacture. Watchmakers had to be exceptionally careful to avoid damaging the PVD treatment during assembly, which posed a considerable challenge with a high rejection rate. However, this meticulous approach is part of the brand’s identity and no-compromise philosophy.

This model also introduced the exclusive variable-geometry rotor, a groundbreaking invention that optimizes the movement’s winding mechanism and can be personalized to suit the owner’s lifestyle by adjusting the six-position rib placement setting. The patented mechanism alters the rotor's inertia, allowing it to speed up the winding process during minimal arm and hand movements, while slowing it down during high-intensity activities.
