During the 1920s, when the wristwatch was still to gain universal acceptance, purse watches emerged as a striking and sophisticated alternative to both the traditional pocket watch and the wristwatch. These timepieces offered an endless array of inventive ways to reveal the time, featuring ingeniously designed case mechanisms such as sliding or folding covers, hinged shutters, rotating grills, and other cleverly conceived actions. More than mere practical accessories, purse watches were a delight to use, a reflection of individuality, and a refined conversation piece.
