Long regarded as the more understated counterpart to the reference 5512 due to the absence of the coveted “Officially Certified Chronometer” designation, the Submariner Reference 5513 has nonetheless become one of the most revered vintage sports watches among collectors. Between 1962 and 1966, the reference underwent a fascinating transitional period during which numerous design elements evolved. These changes included the progression from gilt dials with chapter rings to gilt dials without chapter rings, the eventual introduction of matte dials, and a series of subtle modifications to the case architecture. As a result, examples from this era exhibit a remarkable variety of configurations, many of which were produced only for a brief period, adding significantly to their desirability today.
The present watch represents one of the rarest and most sought-after iterations of the reference. Its gilt dial retains the coveted chapter ring configuration and is further distinguished by the presence of the rare exclamation mark beneath the 6 o’clock marker, a feature widely associated with the early 1960s transitional period when Rolex is believed to have been moving from radioactive radium-based lume to the safer tritium compound. Even more notably, it is housed within a pointed crown guard (PCG) case, a configuration produced only during the early years of the reference, approximately from 1962 to 1963.
Combining several highly prized transitional attributes in a single watch, this example has been preserved in exceptionally attractive condition. Such a combination of rarity, historical significance, and originality is seldom encountered, making it an especially compelling opportunity for collectors of vintage Rolex sports watches.
