The perpetual calendar chronograph collection is widely considered to be the crown jewel of Patek Philippe. The dial design, which has remained largely unchanged from 1941 into the present day, displays the complex information from both complications in a very legible and elegant way, and as a result every single reference, starting with the pioneering reference 1518 and continuing through the mythical reference 2499 and coveted 3970, has become hugely collectible within its own right. The present reference 5971 is no different, and along with its sister reference 5970 are the models which brought the perpetual calendar chronograph into modernity.

Introduced in 2004 and under the guidance of a young Thierry Stern, the 5970/71 series saw the case diameter increased drastically from 36 to 40 mm, along with a reworked case architecture which allowed the watch to wear boldly on the wrist while still remaining well proportioned and gentlemanly. The pushers reverted from the pump-style of the 3970 and later 2499s back to the historic square-shape, harkening back to Patek Philippe’s historic references 1518 and 2499 first series. The new references were an instant hit, and today they are considered a must-have for any serious collector.

The present 5971 is differentiated from its sister reference by the addition of a diamond-set bezel and buckle, adding a further element of luxury and rarity. The eye-catching diamonds offer the perfect contrast against the understated black dial, and in the current market combine to create one of the most sought after configurations for complicated Patek Philippe.
