The art of carving and shaping rock crystal, a transparent and colourless form of quartz, dates back to antiquity. Exquisite objects were made in crystal by the Romans, but the working of rock crystal reached an unparalleled level of sophistication and refinement in Egypt during the Fatimid period (969-1171). During this era, artisans in Cairo produced extraordinary rock crystal vessels for their rulers, demonstrating remarkable skill and artistry.
