Lot Details

Description

modelled by J.W. Lanz, with a gentleman and companion sharing grapes, their clothes painted in tones of puce, upon a small gilt scroll-edged mound base picked out in green, rampant lion and crowned CT monogram mark in underglaze-blue, II mark in underglaze-blue, impressed IHI mark

Height 16.5 cm; 6 ½ in

This group appears to have been adapted by the modeller J.W. Lanz, or possibly by the repairers at the manufactory, to depict at least two different scenes. See Friedrich H. Hoffmann, Frankenthaler Porzellan, Vol. I, Munich, 1911, pl. 25, no. 120, for a version titled 'The Unmasking', modelled with the same figures and base, but holding a mask between them rather than bunches of grapes.
