The original service was created for Frederick the Great in 1769 for the Chinese House at the Sans-Souci, to replace a Meissen service of the same name. The chinoiserie vignettes of figures decorating the service were inspired by prints after Watteau, Huquier and Boucher and also closely relate to the paintings on the ceiling and the gilded limestone sculptures around the Chinese House. Most of it was destroyed during the Second World War.
