This reference stands among the most desirable Submariner Date models, distinguished by its coveted red 'Submariner' inscription. Specialists commonly identify seven different dial executions, referred to as “Marks", each defined by subtle typographical variations.

The earliest three versions are especially prized, as they combine the distinctive red signature with another hallmark of early Submariners: a depth rating expressed in meters before feet.

Mark 1 dials represent the first appearance of the Red Submariner configuration. They are consistently of the 'meters-first' type and are characterised by the red 'SUBMARINER' positioned above the white text. Notable details include closed sixes in the depth numerals and a particular typography for the 'ft' indication, where the 'f' slightly curves upward over the 't.'
