A finely preserved yellow gold consular-cased verge watch by James Tregent, the celebrated London watchmaker known for serving George, Prince of Wales. Active from around 1759 and a member of the Clockmakers' Company from 1781 to 1808, Tregent enjoyed a reputation for producing watches of exceptional quality for an elite clientele. His brother was an enameller, raising the attractive possibility that the present watch resulted from a collaboration between the two craftsmen.
The watch is fitted with a white enamel dial displaying Roman and Arabic numerals and elegant pierced gilt hands, all housed within a richly ornamented gold consular case. The reverse is centred by a finely painted polychrome enamel bouquet composed of blue and green flowers tied with a ribbon, framed by a complementary blue and green enamel border that enhances the vibrancy of the decoration.
Combining refined English horological craftsmanship with the rich decorative taste of the late eighteenth century, this watch is an especially attractive and well-preserved example of the period, distinguished by the quality of both its movement and enamel work.
