Ex-collection Ralph Brocklebank (1840-1921), Haughton, Cheshire, by 12 September 1916;
Thence by descent
The tall, slender stems painted here relate to the flowers on a group of dishes attributed to the 1560s often made with cusped rims decorated with flowerheads flanked by paired tulips (Atasoy and Raby 1989, nos.403, 404 and 406, p.229). The composition of the present example relates most closely to one of those dishes, a dish sold at Christie's, London, 12 April 1988, lot 276 (Atasoy and Raby, op.cit., no.406). In both examples the stems feel animated, stretching and climbing upwards such that the the flower heads are placed within the curve of the cavetto of the dish.
The palette is particularly harmonious here, using a soft wash of turquoise instead of emerald green. A comparable palette, though with a slightly more contrasting cobalt, is found on a cypress-tree design dish sold at Christie's, London, 27 April 2023, lot 121.
