Description

on a circular foot, with plain body engraved with inscription “Sv ANTONIAMa CAVALLI”, with a scrolling handle terminated by a lions’s head, the spout as a maritime god’s mask, marks on the rim: town, date, assay’s maker and maker’s mark, underneath the base and on the handle: assay’s scratch

Height. 20 cm. (8 in.); weight. 772 gr. (24.82 oz.)

Sotheby’s Paris, 1 December 2011, lot. 265.

This shape of ewers was very common in Spain and Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries and later in Italy in the 17th century, copying the earlier ones. Our ewer is typical of the style with the lion’s head handle and the large spout, shaped as a bearded faune’s mask. For a similar ewer, see Anthemion auction, Cardiff, 23 November 2016, lot 168 (sold 8 000£).

The maker’s mark could refer to Antonio Dominici, consul in Messine at the same dates. His marks could be ANTO DOMI and ADC.
