Description

James Dunthorne, the Younger

Colchester, circa 1758 - circa 1793

A Book Auction, probably at Sotheby's, London

Watercolour over pencil heightened with pen and black ink

362 by 540 mm.; 14 by 21 in.

Sale, London, Christie's, 15 June 2015, lot 74 (£20,000)

Possibly, London, Royal Academy, 1787, no. 532

Judging by the hair-styles and clothing of the people attending the auction, this rare and highly amusing image dates to the late 1780s or early 1790s. The auction is probably taking place at Sotheby's which, since its foundation in 1744, had specialised in book sales.

Dunthorne is sometimes referred to as 'The Colchester Hogarth', and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1783 and 1794.
