Description

Joseph Paelinck

Oostakker 1781 - 1839 Brussels

Virgin and Child with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist

Oil on canvas

Signed and dated (partially retouched) center right J. PAELINK (sic) / 182(?)

78,1 x 64,3 cm ; 30¾ by 25¼ in.

This painting, which remains compelling despite early restorations, is typical of Paelinck’s late period, around the 1820s, as is confirmed by the partially readable date on the right of the composition.

Originally from Ghent, the young Joseph Paelinck was initially trained in the city of his birth before being sent to Paris in 1802 to join the workshop of David, whose marked influence is still visible, especially in Christ’s face, which may be compared to David’s more anacreontic compositions.

The signature and date which appear on the right of the composition were partially reconstructed during an earlier restoration, which explains the erroneous ending to Paelinck’s name, but seem to be for the most part original.
