Description

After or possibly workshop of Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt

Prince Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, Stadtholder of the United Provinces (1584-1647)

Oil on panel

Inscribed in the upper part HENRY FREDERIC PRINCE D’ORANGE / P. MIRVELT. pinx.

64,3 x 52 cm ; 25¼ by 20½ in.

This painting reprises the portrait of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, Stadtholder of the United Provinces (1584–1647) by Michiel Jansz. van Miereveldt. Dated 1623, it is now in Ashdown House, Lambourn, Oxfordshire (inv. NT 493066). The composition was very popular and Willem Jacobsz. Delff produced an engraving of it the following year. Widely circulated, the portrait was the subject of numerous versions and copies of varying quality.

As official painter to the Stadtholder, Michiel Jansz. van Miereveldt produced several portraits of members of the Orange family, sometimes with support from his workshop. The exquisite lace collar and the care taken with materials and fabrics attest to the portrait’s fine quality: it could have come directly from the artist’s workshop.
