Abraham Willaerts

Utrecht circa 1603–1669

Dutch coastal view with ships in a choppy sea and fishermen unloading their catch

Oil on canvas

107 x 169 cm ; 42⅛ by 66½ in.

Anonymous sale, Sothebys Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 22 April 1980, lot 152;

Anonymous sale, Sotheby's, London, 10 December 1980, lot 123.

Like his father Adam Willaerts (1577–1664), Abraham was a painter of maritime and harbour scenes. Born in Utrecht, he trained with his father and Jan van Bijlert (1597/8–1671) before travelling to Paris in 1628 to work in the studio of Simon Vouet (1590–1649). From 1637 to 1644 he was in the entourage of Count John Maurice of Nassau-Siegen (1604–1679) during his travels to Brazil, and in 1659 he visited Naples and Rome. Despite his extensive travels, he was most profoundly influenced by his father, to the extent that it is very difficult to distinguish between their paintings.

Willaerts also collaborated with the still-life painter Willem Ormea (circa 1611–1673) and it is possible that the fish laid out on the beach are by Ormea.
