Although best known for his cityscapes, Berckheyde deployed his talents in a variety of genres, including church interiors, still lifes and genre scenes, recalling those of his Haarlem contemporaries Adriaen van Ostade (1610–1685) and Jan Havicksz. Steen (1626–1679).
