oil on oak panel, unframed, the reverse branded with the mark of the City of Antwerp panel makers' guild, and incised with the mark of the unidentified Master with the Star, and a black wax collector's seal

Chevalier François Xavier de Burtin (1743–1818), Brussels;

His posthumous sale, Brussels, Barbé, 4 November 1841, lot 57 (as Rubens);

Anonymous sale, Genoa, Wannenes, 30 November 2016, lot 492 (as workshop of Rubens);

Where acquired by the present owner.

This work is based on a significantly larger painting on canvas in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, attributed to Rubens's workshop and dated to circa 1630.1 The only autograph variant of this subject, which differs in the arrangement of the figures and is dated to circa 1610, is in the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg.2
