Probably Lecchi collection, Brescia.

This portrait is closely related to a likeness of Jacob van der Does (1575–1630) by Jan Anthonisz. van Ravesteyn (1572–1657) at Sypesteyn Castle Museum, Nieuw-Loosdrechtsedijk.1 The Sypesteyn picture, which is three-quarter-length and a pendant to a portrait of Van der Does's wife, Beatrix van Sypesteyn (1589/90–1663),2 is signed and dated 1615.


Jacob van der Does was a councillor and clerk for Princes Frederick Henry (1584–1647) and Willem II of Orange (1626–1650). Beatrix was an aunt of Johan de Witt (1625–1672), who, as Grand Pensionary of Holland, essentially controlled the Dutch political system from around 1650 until 1672.


Note on Provenance

In the early twentieth century, this painting was in the collection of Gustav von Gerhardt, the Royal Hungarian Privy Councillor. Among other works, Von Gerhardt owned the Saint Andrew attributed to Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652), today in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,3 and a drawing by Willem van Mieris (1662–1747) in the Fogg Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts.4
