Where acquired.

A highly comparable figure group appears in a signed painting by Jan Miel (1599–1663) in a private collection, Brussels.1 The handling of the present work also reflects that of Pieter van Laer (1599–1642), who was an associate of Miel. Both artists were part of the Bamboccianti: a group of painters active in Rome in the mid-17th century, who specialised in genre scenes.
