The sitters are two sons of Charles Thorold Wood (1777–1852), of Thoresby, Lincolnshire. This portrait is likely one of a pair, the other of which remains in the family. There also exists a letter penned by the boys' mother, dated Edinburgh 1820, which records the children sitting for Henry Raeburn.
