Cameo with the Head of Medusa

Luigi Rosi was an accomplished 19th-century gem engraver who operated from his workshop in Via Rasella near the Spanish Steps, a center for engravers and goldsmiths in the period. Note his Cameo with Flora in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Milton Weil Collection, inv. no. 40.20.51). The present, beautifully engraved, cameo depicts Medusa and follows a model best known from the cameo of the subject by Luigi Saulini, which is also in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Milton Weil Collection, inv. no. 40.20.52). Another cameo carved with the model and attributed to Saulini was sold at Sotheby's London on 9 July 2020, lot 80.
