Though Orazio Samacchini spent most of his career in and around his native Bologna, in 1563 he contributed to the decoration of the Sala Regia in the Vatican Palace. His work therefore reflects the influence of artists like Raphael and Michelangelo, as well as those he worked alongside in Rome like Federico Zuccaro and Francesco Salviati, but his color palette and sense of light reveal his roots further north.
