The drawing referred to the complex and tense negotiations in the European Union, particularly on issues of economic crisis and austerity.
In this illustration, Lagerfeld showed Angela Merkel in a position perceived as dominant and authoritarian in line with her European policy decisions, particularly towards countries in financial difficulty, such as Greece. It reflected a humorous but pointed critique of Angela Merkel's central and influential role in the management of European affairs at the time.
