The IWC Portugieser is indisputably IWC Schaffhausen’s oldest and most iconic design. Conceived almost 100 years ago in the 1930s at the request of two Portuguese merchants, the first Portugiesers were commissioned to be wristwatches that had the precision of a marine chronometer. Known since its inception for its unusually large and striking size, simple Arabic numerals and slim feuille hands, the first Portugieser was launched in 1939. Over the course of its production, the iconic design has housed various complications from a simple date complication to a perpetual calendar.
The present Reference IW5446-02 houses one of the most coveted complications in watchmaking, the Tourbillon. Released in 2008, the present Portugieser Regulator Tourbillon is numbered 39 out of only 100 pieces produced. Cased in 18k pink gold, the Reference IW5446-02 is powered by the IWC calibre 98845 with a power reserve of 52 hours and frequency of 28800 vph. The elegant dial configuration featuring small seconds at 6 o’clock, hour subdial at 12 o’clock, and the floating tourbillon at 9 o’clock further exemplifies the sophisticated design of the IWC Portugieser.
In wonderful condition, we are pleased to offer the present lot complete with its original box and papers.
