Built for Pan Am pilots during the mid-19th century, Rolex’s GMT-Master family demonstrated that there was demand for a dual-time tool watch for world travelers. Introduced in 1959, reference 1675 built on the success of the outgoing reference 6542 while remedying some of its issues, and has since become a legend in its own right. Technical improvements were made on the basic blueprint of a rotating 24 hour bezel and hand, such as an aluminium bezel for durability and crown guards for robustness. Today, both the GMT-Master and the Pepsi colourway have become icons of the watch industry.

The present watch has several characteristics which make it stand out from standard 1675 production. Perhaps the most noticeable of which is the even tropical dial, which has naturally patinated from the original gloss black to a gorgeous caramel colour. Tropicalisation can be due to sun exposure or defective paint, and turns each watch into an effectively unique treasure, as each tropical dial will age differently. Further points of interest include the “Exclamation Point” dial and “pointed crown guard” case, both of which are absolutely correct and a perfect match for the serial range. All in all, a spectacular caramel example which can be appreciated by even the most astute collectors.
