Initially launched in 2016 with a platinum case and black dial, the Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon stands as one of the most impressive creations by the manufacture in the past decade. Combining three significant complications: a flyback chronograph, perpetual calendar, and tourbillon along with Lange’s signature outsize date, the model is a true feast for the eyes both on the dial and through the movement. While the dial layout recalls that of the Datograph Perpetual, turning the watch over reveals an additional one-minute tourbillon proudly showcased through the sapphire crystal case back.

In 2019, A. Lange & Söhne introduced a limited edition in white gold with a salmon dial, and just over a year ago in 2024, the brand celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Datograph (its hallmark chronograph) with a striking new interpretation: the Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon Honeygold “Lumen.” This latest edition retains much of the original design but forgoes the arc-shaped power reserve indicator that once sat along the outer edge of the dial between 9 and 10 o’clock.

Crafted from Lange’s patented 18k Honeygold alloy, the case offers a distinctive warmth that lies between pink and white gold, while being significantly harder and more durable than traditional 18k gold. As part of the brand’s coveted “Lumen” series, this limited edition features a smoked sapphire dial enhanced with luminous elements that emit a vivid green glow, visible even through the semi-transparent surface in low-light conditions.

As is tradition with A. Lange & Söhne, the movement is as equally breathtaking as the dial. Through the sapphire crystal caseback, the hand-finished Caliber L952.4 is revealed in all its glory. This manually wound movement, assembled twice for optimal precision, comprises 684 components and showcases Lange’s technical prowess. The classic column-wheel chronograph is equipped with a freely oscillating Lange balance spring as well as a Lange balance wheel with eccentric poising weights, assuring excellent rate stability across the entire power reserve of 50 hours. The Caliber L952.4 represents a refined evolution of its predecessor, the L952.2, and while it omits the arc-shaped power reserve indicator, it maintains the column-wheel flyback chronograph with jumping minutes, perpetual calendar, moon-phase display, day/night indicator, and one-minute tourbillon.

As with all Honeygold models, this exceptional timepiece was produced as a limited edition. Out of just 50 examples, the present watch is numbered 19. Sotheby’s is honored to present this ultra-exclusive model at auction for the very first time. Each complication alone stands as a technical masterpiece; combined, they create an extraordinary expression of haute horlogerie. Offered in excellent condition and complete with all its accessories, the A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon Honeygold “Lumen” represents one of the most significant and visually captivating achievements in the brand’s modern history.
