Part of the esteemed Saxonia Collection, the Triple Split chronograph represents not only a milestone achievement for A. Lange & Söhne but also a defining moment in the history of modern watchmaking. It showcases a groundbreaking complication never before realized, setting a new benchmark even within the manufacture’s own illustrious legacy. Described by the brand as “The Ultimate Chronograph,” this wristwatch of staggering complexity stands as one of the most significant technical advancements of contemporary horology.
Unveiled at SIHH 2018, the A. Lange & Söhne Triple Split was the first chronograph ever capable of measuring and comparing two separate events across seconds, minutes, and for the first time, hours—up to 12 in total. This remarkable functionality is displayed through three pairs of hands, with the rattrapante hands distinguished by their elegant golden hue contrasting against the classic blue. All chronograph and rattrapante hands feature a flyback mechanism, reflecting the brand’s relentless pursuit of mechanical perfection and attention to detail.
The split-seconds chronograph, or rattrapante, has long been regarded as one of the most technically demanding complications to produce and regulate. It is also one of the three key complications that traditionally define a Grand Complication timepiece (alongside a sonnerie or repeater and a perpetual calendar). In a classic rattrapante, two superimposed chronograph seconds hands run together until the split button is pressed—at which point one hand stops while the other continues, allowing for intermediate timing before they reunite at another press. The ability to track successive laps or intervals makes this mechanism both practical and highly sophisticated. Extending this principle further, the Triple Split takes the concept to unprecedented levels. While the Double Split already allowed for timing of seconds and minutes, the Triple Split introduces a third layer—hours—an innovation previously thought to be impossible due to the immense mechanical complexity involved.
Powered by the hand-finished Caliber L132.1, an evolution of the Double Split’s L001.1, the movement comprises 567 components and offers a power reserve of 55 hours. Its dial has been thoughtfully reconfigured to accommodate the new hour totalizer at 12 o’clock, while the power reserve indicator has been repositioned to 6 o’clock, neatly balanced between the running seconds at 9 o’clock and the chronograph minute counter at 3 o’clock.
