Among the many limited edition creations from A. Lange & Söhne, few have captivated collectors quite like the Lumen series. Instantly recognizable and deeply admired by enthusiasts, this collection is defined by its distinctive tinted sapphire dial, which allows ultraviolet light to penetrate and charge the luminous material beneath. The result is a mesmerizing display of fully illuminated discs that dramatically transform the watch’s appearance in low light.
The Zeitwerk Lumen, introduced in 2010 in platinum, marked the debut of this remarkable series. The concept, as explained by Director of Product Development Anthony de Haas, was born from a simple nighttime frustration: the original Zeitwerk had no luminous markers, making it impossible to read in the dark. The solution was applying lume to the digital time discs which was easier said than done, since the discs rotate constantly (once per minute for the minute disc, once every ten minutes for the tens, and so forth). To overcome this, Lange devised an ingenious method: a smoked sapphire crystal that acts as a “reverse sunglass,” blocking visible light while allowing UV rays to pass through. This constant exposure charges the Super-LumiNova throughout the day, enabling the discs to glow vividly at night. Completing the striking aesthetic, the black-coated German silver time bridge provides a bold and harmonious visual contrast.
In 2021, A. Lange & Söhne unveiled the present evolution of the Zeitwerk Lumen, this time made from the brand’s proprietary honey gold which is an exclusive alloy known for its warm, rich hue and superior hardness compared to traditional yellow gold. Beyond its refined appearance, this updated version introduces a practical innovation: a pusher at the side of the case that enables independent adjustment of the hour display, simplifying time setting. Produced in a limited edition of just 200 pieces, the present example, number 144, remains in unworn condition, still retaining its original factory stickers throughout.
