The Royal Oak, designed by Gerald Genta, stands as one of the most iconic and enduring watch designs of the past century, with its legendary genesis rooted in the reference 5402ST. Unveiled in 1972 by Audemars Piguet, the Royal Oak Reference 5402 revolutionized the horological landscape as the world’s premier stainless steel luxury sports watch boasting a seamlessly integrated bracelet. Its debut marked a historic moment, commanding a price tag higher than even the brand's gold dress wristwatches due to the incredible amount of work invested in its finishing.

The reference 5402 can be divided into four distinct series, denoted by the letters A, B, C, and D. The first release in 1972 comprised a limited production of 2,000 pieces, is famously known as the ‘A-series’. These timepieces are distinguished by engraved serial numbers on the caseback starting with the letter A. Subsequently, production continued with the sequential B, C, and D series. As expected, the A-Series Royal Oaks hold a special place in the hearts of collectors, given their status as the first production release. Beyond its collectibility, the Royal Oak's design has left an indelible mark on the watchmaking industry, inspiring countless significant timepieces in the years that followed. Moreover, the Royal Oak played a pivotal role in establishing the widespread popularity and desirability of steel sports watches. The present lot is offered with an upgraded dial that has been replaced during a servicing.
