Patek Philippe’s World Time wristwatches rank among the manufacture’s most emblematic creations. The origins of this ingenious complication date to 1930–1931, when watchmaker Louis Cottier devised a movement that transformed the way time could be read around the world. His system combined a central display for local time with a rotating 24-hour ring and a fixed outer dial bearing the names of major cities. By aligning the desired city at 12 o’clock, the wearer could simultaneously view the correct time across all 24 time zones, day and night, while maintaining an elegant and legible local-time indication on a single dial.
Patek Philippe was among the first to adopt Cottier’s innovation in the early 1930s, establishing a legacy that continues to this day. Introduced in 2006 as the successor to the Reference 5110 of 2000, the Reference 5130 refined this heritage with a 39.5 mm Calatrava-style case—2.5 mm larger than its predecessor—offering improved legibility and an expanded rotating city disc. Designed to provide effortless global timekeeping within a timeless aesthetic, the Reference 5130 exemplifies Patek Philippe’s mastery in uniting mechanical ingenuity with refined elegance.
