Description
modelled with a flock of horses in a moment of brief respite, with two young Kirghiz boys in malahai hats resting next to them, inscribed E. Lansere 1880
length 85 cm; 33 1/2 in.
Thought to have been created in 1879, this bronze depicts Kirghiz horses, the most widespread breed in central Asia. The breed is known for its athletic physique and endurance and were used as both saddle and pack horses. This model was very popular with examples in several museums and private collections including the Tretyakov Gallery (inv. 4909). Despite this, very few have appeared at auction. Similar to other large bronzes, a bas-relief military ornament is placed on the base, further highlighting this impressive composition.
