Lot Details

Description

rectangular, finely inlaid with two male figures in traditional Greek and Ottoman attire involved in a sabre fight, the one on the right protecting a lady further wearing traditional headdress, on a black glass background, in original velvet-lined leather case with paper label for Gioacchino Barberi/Mosaicista/Piazza di Spagna N. 99/31524 Roma,

the plaque 5.3cm., 2 1/8 in. wide, the case 7.8cm., 3 in. wide

The extensive repertoire of Gioacchino Barberi's subject matter included figures in distinct costumes, such as traditional Albanian, Ottoman or Greek costume. For a brooch representing a pair of dancers in Eastern European dress, signed by the famous Roman mosaicista (1783-1857), see Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: Private Collections, 2016, cat. no 171, p. 212.

The subject on the present lot probably refers to the successful War of Independence by Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman between 1821 and 1829.
