Description

rectangular, the lid set with a micromosaic plaque of a view of Paestum with the first and second temples of Hera, in a gold frame, slender thumbpiece, maker's mark, town mark

The view of Paestum is freely based on Aloja Vincenzo's engraving Veduta de' Tempi di Pesto presa da ponente after Luigi Fergola, published by Nicola Gervasi (active 1790-1804) in Naples in 1804. For another version of this view, see a gold box by Andreas Markel, Vienna, set with a micromosaic plaque, in the David Iakobachvili Collection (Haydn Williams, 19th-Century Snuffboxes: The David and Mikhail Iakobachvili Collection, vol II, London, 2025, p. 301). A third one is recorded in Domenico Petochi, Massimo Alfieri & Maria Glazia Branchetti, I Mosaici Minuti Romani dei Secoli XVIII e XIX, Rome, 1981, no. 33.
