Description

Young Spirits Ferg & Harris Wings Over Kintyre 31 Year Old Distilled at Springbank Distillery 1992

  • The House of Ferg & Harris presents “Wings Over Kintyre”, a hand-selected single cask of 31 Year Old organic whisky distilled at Springbank Distillery in 1992.

  • They have transformed this already exceedingly rare whisky into something truly one-of-a-kind by finishing the liquid in a 1.2 litre oak cask which previously held organic cognac, before bottling in 2023 at 47.6% abv.

  • The stunning bottle features delicate barley stalks detailed in soft gold. The bottle itself suggests the gentle sloping sides of a still, completed by a striking asymmetrical glass stopper.

  • The bottle is held within a unique illuminated presentation case, designed to reflect the soaring emotions and feelings of freedom evoked by the romantic wildness of the Kintyre peninsula where the whisky was distilled.

  • The presentation case features a stained-glass frontage hand-crafted by esteemed Inverclyde artist Alec Galloway. The handcrafted frame is hewn from sustainable oak by Scottish woodworker Eoghan Menzies.

  • The winning bidder will be invited to join Alex Harrison for a private tasting at Young Spirits' headquarters in Edinburgh. They will also receive the cask in which the whisky was finished, personalised with their details. The lot also includes hand-waxed glass ampoules to allow the lot’s new owner to sample the spirit.

Tasting Notes:

Colour: Rich Amber – A soft, golden hue with warm undertones, suggesting gentle oxidation and well-managed cask interaction. The natural clarity hints at a non-chill-filtered whisky, allowing its full body and texture to shine through.

Nose: The nose opens with welcoming aromas of freshly baked malted biscuits, offering a rich cereal base. Notes of creamy vanilla and light baking spices - including nutmeg and a hint of white pepper - add warmth and finesse. As the whisky breathes, layers of baked orchard fruits such as spiced apple tart and stewed pears come forward, underscored by a gentle wooded depth. The use of a miniature 1.2 litre cask has intensified the oak influence, introducing delicate nuances of sawn cedar, light sandalwood, and a subtle earthy dryness that complements the malt character.

Palate: Bottled at its natural cask strength of 46.7% ABV, the palate is impressively balanced, delivering both body and finesse without overwhelming heat. It opens with notes of lightly sweetened oat biscuits, followed by ginger warmth, vanilla custard, and golden raisins. A burst of baked apple and citrus zest provides lift, while the enhanced oak contact from the small cask imparts an elegant backbone of toasted wood, nutmeg, and a hint of dry roasted almonds. There’s a soft, creamy weight to the mouthfeel that lingers beautifully.

Finish: The finish is long, clean, and structured, echoing with flavours of toasted oats, dry ginger spice, and a crisp, refreshing citrus peel sharpness. The 1.2 litre cask finish leaves a lasting impression of refined oak, light wood tannins, and white pepper warmth, offering a satisfying, dry closure without overpowering the spirit’s more delicate layers.
