Sotheby’s, Paris, 27 April 2017, lot 248

Bernard Molitor (1755-1833), cabinetmaker, received master in 1777.

The scalloped drapery frieze appears on several pieces of furniture by Jean-Henri Riesener, as well as on a secretary desk stamped by Riesener and Molitor (Drouot auction, Paris, 2 December 1994), who collaborated regularly.

The keyholes are identical to those adorning a pair of commodes stamped by Molitor and commissioned by the duc de Choiseul Praslin (illustrated in U. Leben, Molitor, Paris, 1992, p. 78). They can also be found on a commode stamped by Riesener from the Château de Rambouillet, sold at Sotheby's Monaco, 21 June 1975, lot 127. However, our piece of furniture remains closer to Molitor's style than to Riesener's.
