John Walter Hely Hutchinson, 1882-1955
Howard M. Nixon, Twelve Books in Fine Bindings from the Library of J. W. Hely‐Hutchinson, Oxford, printed for presentation to the members of the Roxburghe Club, 1953, large fol., color-printed frontispiece and plates, pencil annotations, two laid-in photocopies, russet morocco over beige cloth, deckled edges, (a few spots of wear to extremities, light dust-soiling to boards), from the library of H. W. Edwards (ex-Sotheby's, October 30, 1989, lot 954)
A lavishly produced Roxburghe club book on twelve magnificent bookbindings from the library of J. W. Hely-Hutchinson, with descriptions and essays by Howard M. Nixon. The five essays are on related subjects, including "English Royal Library Bindings," "French Bookbinding in the Middle of the Sixteenth Century," and "Thomas Wooten and his Bindings." Per A.N.L. Munby's 1953 review from The Book Collector (a photocopy of the article is laid in), this is the first Roxburghe book ever written on the subject of bookbindings, and "The union of Mr. Hely-Hutchinson's connoisseurship and Mr. Nixon's scholarship has set a very standard."
Sold as a group, not subject to return.
