Description

Lot Comprises:

John Roland Abbey, 1894-1969

Geoffrey Dudley Hobson, English Bindings 1490‐1940 in the Library of J. R. Abbey, London, [privately printed] 1940, fol., plates, some color-printed, publisher's brown cloth, head‐edge gilt, (minimal wear to cloth), no. 169 of 180 copies, ex-William P. Wreden, bookseller (ex-Swann, September 26, 1990)

A privately printed and finely illustrated work describing 130 English bookbindings from the collection of Captain J.R. Abbey. The bindings chosen show, among other things, the evolution of English gilt-tooling from the mid-16th to early 20th centuries. The book was published during World War II, so Captain J.R. Abbey entrusted the text entirely to G. D. Hobson and dedicated the book "To our Friends and Allies the People of France."

Sold as a group, not subject to return.
