The nineteenth century Japanned decoration appears to be by the same artist who Japanned the celebrated set of Gardner family Queen Anne side chairs and armchair. Eight side chairs are known; two are in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (acc. nos. 1981.16 and 1981.17), two are in the Bayou Bend collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (acc. nos. B.69.247.1 and B.69.247.2), two are in the collection of Historic Deerfield (acc. nos. HD 55.035.1 and HD 55.035.2), a seventh was sold in these rooms in the Important Americana including Furniture, Folk Art, Folk Paintings, Quilts and Prints, January 26-27, 1989, sale 5810, lot 1503, an eighth was sold in these rooms in the Highly Important Americana from the Stanley Paul Sax Collection, January 16-17, 1998, sale 7087, lot 441, a ninth side chair and an armchair remain with Gardner descendants. A related Queen Anne side chair again decorated by the same artist is in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art (acc. no. 97.19.1).
