one decorated with Chinese figures in a village scene, the other depicting a battle over a bridge, both with typical Chinese buildings and foliage, the base rims engraved as leaves, the rectangular handles engraved with foliate scroll on matted ground, one engraved in a wide banner Henry Peek Condit / from Uncle Harry / China / 1871, the other engraved in an oval Mary Blackburne Woodward / from Uncle Harry / China / 1871, marked on bases, with retailer's mark for Hoaching and artisan workshop mark for Shan

William "Harry" Henry Condit (1839–1873) was a Brooklyn merchant. He married Sophia Ward Blackburne (1843–1868) in 1864. He gifted these tankards, purchased in China, to his infant nephew, Henry Peek Condit, and Mary Blackburne Woodward, his niece through his wife. He died in Florence, Italy in 1873; his wife had passed away five years earlier. Their children, Sophia Ward Condit and Elizabeth Blackburne Condit, were raised by their Aunt Elizabeth, mother to Mary Blackburne Woodward, at 259 Henry Street.
